Is It Faster to Drive or Fly From Greenville to Charleston?
Driving wins, and it is not close. Our Google Flights search from Greenville-Spartanburg (GSP) to Charleston (CHS) for Friday, December 4, 2026 turned up zero nonstop flights. Every top result connected through another city, Atlanta, Charlotte or Baltimore, and the quickest was about 3 hours 36 minutes in the air and on the ground in between. That is already longer than the drive before you add security, boarding and the ride from the airport.

Is There a Train From Greenville, SC to Charleston, SC?
Not a direct one. Greenville's Amtrak station, at 1120 West Washington Street, is served by the Crescent, which runs between New York and New Orleans and does not stop in Charleston. Down here, trains stop at the North Charleston Intermodal Transportation Center on Gaynor Avenue, and the two lines that use it, the Palmetto and Silver Meteor, never touch Greenville. Getting from one line to the other means a connection far out of the way, so for a 212 mile trip the train does not make sense.
Without a car, the Greyhound bus is the realistic choice. Its Greenville to North Charleston route ends at that same Gaynor Avenue transit center. From there, 257 Rutledge is about 13 minutes by car. Check the ticket for current times before you lock in a check-in plan.
Where Can You Break Up the Drive From Greenville to Charleston?
If you have kids in the car, Riverbanks Zoo and Garden in Columbia sits close to I-26 at 500 Wildlife Parkway, about halfway. Routed through the zoo, Google Maps showed 217 miles and 3 hours 25 minutes in total, only a few minutes more behind the wheel than going direct. Budget your time at the zoo on top of that.
The zoo's visitor information page lists winter hours of 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. from November 2 through January 31, and it is open daily except Thanksgiving and Christmas. A morning at the zoo and an afternoon on I-26 still puts you in Charleston near check-in time. For more ideas once you arrive, see our guide to Charleston with kids.
Should You Make It a Day Trip or a Weekend?
A weekend. A same day trip means about 6 and a half hours in the car for a few hours downtown, and you would be back on I-26 before dinner. Two nights gives you a Friday evening, a full Saturday and an easy Sunday morning, which is the version of Charleston people actually come back for.
LOCK IN YOUR WEEKEND: Two nights is the sweet spot from the Upstate. See which rooms are free on our accommodations page, or phone 843.790.7557 and tell us your Friday arrival time.

FAQs

Not a direct one. The Crescent serves Greenville but skips Charleston, and the Palmetto and Silver Meteor serve Charleston but skip Greenville. A rail trip needs a long connection, so for this 212 mile trip, driving or the Greyhound bus is far more practical.
