What Is the Best Way to Get From Columbia to Charleston?

Driving, for most people. It is the most direct option and lets you leave on your own schedule.

Intercity buses run between Columbia and North Charleston. Greyhound's route page lists the Charleston stop at 4565 Gaynor Avenue in North Charleston, not downtown, and the carrier says the ticket shows the latest stop details.

By train it is less simple. Columbia's Amtrak station at 850 Pulaski Street is served by the Floridian, while the Charleston area's station, the North Charleston Intermodal Transportation Center at 4565 Gaynor Avenue, is served by the Palmetto and Silver Meteor. Because different routes serve each station, check Amtrak's live schedule for connections before you plan around rail.

Whichever you choose, you arrive in North Charleston, so plan a rideshare or taxi for the last stretch to the peninsula.

Once you are downtown, much of what a weekend visitor wants is walkable. That is the case for staying near the Historic District instead of commuting in each day.

Is Charleston a Day Trip or a Weekend Trip From Columbia?

Young friends enjoying outdoor adventure, posing with a map for a memorable photo.

It can be either, but the math favors a weekend. A same day round trip means close to four hours in the car, which leaves a short window downtown and pushes the drive home past dark in the cooler months.

Staying one or two nights changes the trip. You get a Friday night dinner, a full Saturday on foot, an evening show if one is on, and a slow Sunday morning before the drive back.
