For mild weather, plan a spring or fall trip. NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals put Charleston's average high at 72.3°F in April and 75.6°F in October. July and August are the hottest months, and August is the wettest. Pick your month by what you want to do, then book your room once the dates are set.

Most best time lists for Charleston repeat the same seasons without numbers. This one uses NOAA's official climate normals for the Charleston City weather station, hurricane season dates from NOAA, and festival dates checked on each organizer's own site, so you can match a month to the trip you actually want.

When Is Hurricane Season in Charleston?

Captivating view of a lighthouse framed by driftwood on Folly Beach, South Carolina.

June 1 through November 30. NOAA's satellite service marks September 10 as the peak of the Atlantic hurricane season.

That does not rule out a late summer or fall trip, but it does mean keeping an eye on the National Hurricane Center in the days before you travel. Read the cancellation terms for your stay when you book, so you know your options if a storm forms.

When Is the Rainy Season in Charleston?

Summer. June through September each average more than 4.8 inches of rain at the Charleston City station, and August is the wettest month at 6.11 inches across about 11.7 days.

Rain on a summer trip does not have to sink the day. Plan museums and long lunches as backups, and use the pool hours when the sky clears.

What Is the Least Crowded Time to Visit Charleston?

We could not find a source that measures crowds month by month, so we will not guess. What the event calendar does show is a quieter stretch: between New Year's Day and SEWE in mid-February, the main listed event is Restaurant Week.

Rates change by date at every property, including ours, so compare your exact nights before you decide. January and February also suit longer stays, when an apartment with a kitchen or kitchenette makes a few weeks in town easier.

Where Should You Stay in Charleston Any Time of Year?

Somewhere you can walk from in every season. Across its three restored homes in Cannonborough-Elliottborough, a short walk from the Historic District, 257 Rutledge rents four suites with their own entrances, five apartments and one freestanding three-bedroom house.

On a July afternoon, the pool matters: the inn's site lists a heated saltwater pool shared by guests and open year round. If you plan to drive in, confirm the parking setup for the room type you choose, since it differs between suites, apartments and the house.
